About GRAMF

The GRAMF Foundation exists to honor the legacy and many educational and ministerial contributions of the late Dr. Gene R. Alston who died suddenly on February 14, 2005. Reverend Dr. Gene R. Alston joined the Free Methodist Church at the early age of nine, through a mission run by the late Julia Shelhamer. She helped him to give his life to Christ and also helped him with scholarships and funds to go to Greenville College, a Free Methodist College in Greenville, Il. Years later, Gene would complete his studies and be conferred the degree of Bachelor of Arts & Science in Education on the 6th day of June, 1966.

After his graduation from college, he went onto Asbury Seminary and earned a second bachelor’s and later, a Master’s of Divinity degree with every intention of becoming a minister. He received his full ordination as an Elder and later became the Principal of the Central Free Methodist School in Shreveport, La, where he served for six years. Gene then moved to Alton, Illinois and started teaching and later became an Administrator in the Alton School District until 1997. It was during these years that he retained his status as a minister in the Alton Free Methodist Church, serving as the Director of Christian Education and also earned three more degrees, including a PhD. at Saint Louis University. Upon retirement from the school district, he accepted a an assignment to Pastor Unity Fellowship Church, in Alton, an assignment that he prepared for as a young man.

GRAMF was founded in (2023) and established by his son, the Right Reverend Paul C. Alston as a way to honor his late Father’s legacy, contributions and lifelong achievements to his family, the Free Methodist Church, Greenville College, Asbury Seminary and the former Central Free Methodist School in Shreveport.
